Navy 37, Stanford 9 STANFORD, Calif. ( AP) - The Navy players gathered in the corner of the stadium to celebrate with their band after the final horn blew. What started as a celebration of Stanford' s renovated stadium ended in a dominating Navy win and more disappointment for the Cardinal. Reggie Campbell ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns to help Navy spoil the unveiling of the new Stanford Stadium by beating the Cardinal 37- 9 Saturday night. ` ` We knew they would come out excited because they were opening a brand new stadium, the fireworks, the flyover, ' ' Navy defensive back Jeremy Mc. Gown said. ` ` I think the excitement of being the opening and them being so fired up got us fired up as well. ' ' Brian Hampton also ran for two scores and Adam Ballard rushed 26 times for 122 yards for the Midshipmen ( 3- 0) , who started the season with three straight wins for only the second time since 1979.

The Cardinal ( 0- 3) were left to wonder about the state of the program in Walt Harris' second year as coach. This is the worst start for Stanford since it lost the first four games in 1987. ` ` We wanted to impress our fans and we wanted to play well, ' ' said receiver Evan Moore, who left in the first quarter with a stress reaction in his right foot. ` ` It definitely hurts. It' s just not our time right now.

We have to pick it up and get rolling again. ' ' Stanford began the renovation project last November, immediately after the team' s season- finale against Notre Dame. The venue looks like its old self from the outside, but otherwise there' s little resemblance of the former stadium. The number of seats has been decreased from 85, 500 to 50, 000 to make for a more intimate setting. With fans closer to the field and the metal seats in the second deck, the noise level is expected to be louder than at the old stadium. But the Stanford contingent in the crowd of 44, 022 didn' t have much to cheer.

The Cardinal committed three turnovers, including two fumbled kickoffs, and didn' t score a touchdown until Anthony Kimble' s 3- yard run with 11: 55 to go made it 27- 9. Navy, which relies almost exclusively on the run in its option offense and had only three completions the first two games, actually completed two passes before Trent Edwards had his first for Stanford in the opening minute of the second quarter. The Midshipmen even had the advanta in yards passing before Stanford put together an 86- yard drive to end the half with a 22- yard field goal by Aaron Zagory that cut Navy' s lead to 10- 3. Edwards finished 23- for- 35 for 226 yards and an interception as Stanford struggled without its starting receivers. Receiver Mark Bradford could miss the rest of the season after tearing ligaments in his right foot and Moore left in the first quarter. ` ` It' s frustrating because we know what we need to do to win but we' re just not executing right now, ' ' Edwards said.

Hampton finished 8- for- 11 for 75 yards and ran for 48 more. Navy finished with 367 yards rushing. Navy took control at the start of the second half after Campbell returned the opening kick 57 yards to the Stanford 42. He then capped the drive with a 14- yard run off an option play to make it 17- 3. ` ` I don' t think we played as well as we could the first half, but I think in the second half we came out and had a good first drive, ' ' Ballard said. ` ` I think that set the tone for the entire second half. ' ' After a 39- yard field goal by Joey Bullen, Stanford' s Brandon Harrison fumbled the kickoff and Rashawn King recovered at the 16.

Four plays later, Hampton scored on a 2- yard keeper that made it 27- 3 and sent many of the fans home early. Campbell added a 17- yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Navy put together a 15- play drive in the first quarter, leading to a 20- yard field goal by Bullen for the first score of the game. On the ensuing kickoff, Byron Mc. Coy knocked the ball loose from returner Jason Evans and recovered the fumble at the Cardinal 25. The Midshipmen drove down and scored on Hampton' s 1- yard run on the first play of the second quarter to make it 10- 0.

The game was played without the Stanford marching band. The school said this week the band will not be allowed to perform at any athletic events this month because members vandalized their rehearsal trailer in July with spray paint and sledgehammers. Navy' s band put on the halftime show and even played Stanford' s fight song on occasion.

NEW YORK ( AP) - The Philadelphia 76ers finally have a winning streak - and the New York Knicks to thank for it.

Willie Green scored 18 points, and the 76ers completed a home- and- home sweep of the Knicks with a 105- 77 victory Saturday night. Andre Iguodala added 17 points and Reggie Evans had 14 rebounds for the 76ers, who beat the Knicks 101- 90 Friday in Philadelphia. This one was even easier, giving them consecutive victories for the first time this season. The Sixers passed the Knicks to escape last place in the Atlantic Division and have won the last four meetings in the series. ` ` Right now we' re upbeat, ' ' Sixers guard Louis Williams said. Nate Robinson, who didn' t even play in the first half, scored 25 points for the Knicks, who trailed by as much as 28 during a performance that ranked somewhere between careless and simply not caring.

They gave up a number of dunks, usually after a turnover, and were frequently booed. ` ` I was searching tonight, ' ' Knicks coach Isiah Thomas said. ` ` I went one through 12 just trying to find any combination that would work, any person that had some type of energy or fire. And there was nothing there tonight. ' ' It was another miserable night at Madison Square Garden, where the home team resorted to playing music a few times to drown out fans' cries to fire Thomas. Thomas' interior tandem of Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph combined for just eight points, six by Curry, and only six shots. ` ` Tonight was definitely a tough game, ' ' Curry said. ` ` Two in a row, back- to- back with Philly.

It' s been a while since I felt like this. ' ' New York' s David Lee was called for a flagrant foul 1 when he knocked Williams to the ground on a drive to the basket in the third quarter. Williams landed hard on his shoulder and head, but stayed in the game a little longer before leaving for good. He said he felt a little dizzy.

Kyle Korver and Thaddeus Young each scored 14 points for Philadelphia.

Andre Miller added 11 points and 10 assists, and the Sixers outrebounded the Knicks 47- 27. ` ` We were just executing.

I don' t want to say we were playing harder than them, we were just playing hard, ' ' Evans said. ` ` I can' t really speak for them, I don' t really know their team like that to know if they' re playing hard or not. But I can really say we we out there playing hard. Everybody who had a Sixers uniform gave an A- plus out there and it really showed. ' ' Stephon Marbury had six points in his first game back at Madison Square Garden since his father' s death. No Knicks starter was in double figures. Marbury' s father was taken from MSG to a hospital at halftime of the Knicks' loss to Phoenix last Sunday and died before the game ended.

Stephon Marbury missed Wednesday' s victory at New Jersey and returned in Friday' s game, the day after the funeral, managing two points in 13 minutes. ` ` I think it' s going to be emotional with him, particularly tonight and I think for a while, ' ' Thomas said before the game. ` ` When you lose a parent in the way that he lost him, you don' t get over that in a day or two. Sometimes it takes years for people to go through that process. ' ' There was a moment of silence for Don Marbury before the game, and Stephon Marbury was cheered during player introductions for the first time since he left the team and skipped a game in Phoenix last month.

Marbury didn' t speak to reporters after the game. The Knicks played with little energy at the start, quickly falling behind by double digits. They cut the lead to 24- 19 after one quarter and took the lead early in the second, but committed six turnovers and had only five baskets in the period, and Philadelphia regained control to take a 49- 37 halftime lead. New York' s sloppy play returned in the third quarter, allowing the Sixers to push the lead to 20.

The ` ` Fire Isiah! ' ' chants started during one sloppy stretch of the period, which the MSG staff responded to by playing some music over the sound system to drown out the fans' voices. Philadelphia led 75- 57 after three, and Korver hit a pair of 3- pointers during a 12- 3 run to open the fourth that gave the 76ers an 87- 60 bulge. ` ` It' s nice to get a win, back- to- back especially, ' ' Iguodala said. ` ` I don' t think the Knicks played their best basketball.

We still have room for improvement but we will take these two and keep moving. ' ' Lee finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Notes: The game began a stretch where the Knicks play six of seven at home.

Dallas and Seattle visit next week, and after a game in Chicago, the Knicks return home to host New Jersey, Indiana and Cleveland. . . . Jamal Crawford appeared to hit a 3- pointer at the buzzer that would have cut the Sixers' halftime lead to 49- 40. But while reviewing the monitor to see if the shot was released in time, the referees noticed Crawford was out of bounds, so the basket was disallowed and 0. 2 seconds were put back on the clock.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. & # 8211; & nbsp; At 11: 30 a. m. Wednesday morning, the Ares 1- X experimental rocket & # 8212; the next- generation of America' s space flight program & # 8212; blasted off flawlessly through clear skies at Cape Canaveral. This launch shows how challenging rocket science really is: Blue skies over the launch pad in Florida hid a variety of challenges, including static- filled clouds and high- altitude winds.

Launching a rocket through these conditions isn' t like a plane taking off from a landing strip: It' s more like shooting a rubberband through a keyhole from across a parking lot.

At 11: 26, NASA resumed the 4- minute launch countdown that had been on pause since 8 a. m Tuesday morning. The ignition system armed, the water and electrical systems activated, and at 11: 30 a. m. , the Ares 1- X experimental rocket blasted off through clear skies from NASA' s launch pad in Florida. The ship passed Mach 2, achieving speeds of over 1, 540 mph.

Then, at 22. 2 nautical miles up in the air, " burnout" occurred, a stage at which the two segments of the rocket separate and the capsule falls back to Earth. The test rocket includes a real solid- rocket first stage, with a mock second stage and dummy Orion crew capsule on top to simulate the intended weight and size of Ares I. Ares I- X is the tallest booster in service or about to fly and stands about 327 feet high & # 8212; 14 stories taller than NASA' s space shuttles. This rocket could eventually take man into space, back to the moon.

In an actual moon launch, the second stage of the rocket will contain the liquid propellant that carries the capsule further into space, and ultimately into orbit. Clouds, snagged tethers and even a misdirected cargo ship within the danger area in the Atlantic Ocean contributed to an eventual postponement in Monday' s scheduled launch of the Ares 1- X.

For the first time, scientists have given several diabetic patients blood vessels grown in a lab from donated skin cells. The work is a key step toward creating a supply of ready- to- use veins and arteries that could be implanted in dialysis patients, soldiers with damaged limbs, children with heart defects, people having heart bypass surgery and others.

The blood vessels are made by a California company, Cytograft Tissue Engineering Inc. Three dialysis patients in have received them so far, and they are working well two to eight months later.

A larger study in Europe is planned. The research is considered so promising that the featured it Monday in the first of a new series of webcasts about cutting- edge science.

TRENTON, N. J. & # 8211; & nbsp; Environmental officials urged swimmers and kayakers to stay out of New York City waters Thursday because a wastewater treatment plant disabled by fire was spewing millions of gallons of raw sewage into the Hudson River. New York City Department of Environmental Protection officials urged people to avoid swimming, canoeing, and any other recreational activities involving direct contact with the water through at least Sunday in New York Harbor on the Hudson River, on the East River along Manhattan, and the Harlem River. Police harbor units were patrolling near the plant to ensure boaters keep a proper distance. The city Parks Department was restricting access to the river at the 79th Street Boat Basin and placing signs prohibiting recreational water activities from all city boat launch sites along the Hudson River and other nearby sites, according to DEP spokesman Farrell Sklerov.

DEP staff and contractors were inside the facility assessing damage and performing cleanup. Officials gave no word on when the plant would be running again.

Some wastewater was being diverted to other facilities, Sklerov said.

DEP and city health officials were taking samples in the harbor and at area beaches, which remain open. The North River Wastewater Treatment Plant was taken offline Wednesday following a four- alarm fire in the engine room. Untreated wastewater began flowing into the river beginning at 5: 15 p. m.

Wednesday and has continued since. The plant has been in operation since 1976 and treats on average 120 million gallons of wastewater a day. The Westchester County Health Department notified its residents to avoid direct contact with the Hudson River along Westchester County through the weekend.

New Jersey Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin said water tests were being done for bacteria and pathogens. He said no impact is expected south of Sandy Hook at the Jersey Shore. " We' re on top of it, we want the public to be aware we' re staying on top of it and we' re going to continue to communicate as we learn more information, " Martin said Thursday afternoon.

Not only must Orlando provide nightlife for more than 50 million visitors each year, it must also make it memorable enough to bring people back again and again. The city' s main domestic rival, Las Vegas, accomplishes this with stage spectaculars, free drinks at the slots, and promises of money for nothing. But for Orlando it' s more difficult. Why? Because its visitors are more diverse.

They can be a family from Canada, newlyweds from the Midwest, or retirees from Japan, and Orlando is required by law to provide appropriate entertainment for them all. When you enter the fiefdom known as Walt Disney World, you' re likely to see as many watering holes as cartoon characters— and this is true even after the closing of Disney' s Pleasure Island nightlife complex. You have a choice of nightlife at various Disney shopping and entertainment complexes— from the casual down- by- the- shore Board. Walk to the much larger multi- area Downtown Disney, which comprises the Marketplace and West Side.

Two long- running dinner shows provide an evening of song, dance, and dining, all for a single price. You can also frequent a wide range of themed bars, lounges, and clubs at Disney resorts before hitting a theme park after dark to see a stage show or catch fireworks or a parade. At Universal, the after- hours action has seeped out of the parks and into City.

Walk, an eclectic and eccentric 30- acre pastiche of shops, restaurants, clubs, and concert venues. City. Walk' s attitude is as hip and sassy as anywhere in the Universal domain. Although City. Walk— with all its clubs, concert venues, and nightly shows like those by Blue Man Group— is your best one- stop place for nightlife, it' s not your only option.

The downtown clubs may have lost their monopoly on nighttime entertainment when Disney and Universal muscled their way onto the scene. As the pendulum swings, though, more locals are making their way back downtown. There are many independent clubs and venues scattered throughout Orlando and into Kissimmee. Among the noteworthy spots are BB King' s Blues Club and ICEBAR, both on International Drive.

Although completion is several years away, the city has approved a multibillion package to bring in a new performing arts center and other venues. Developers, too, are hoping to jump- start a downtown revival by salvaging old buildings and adding new nightclubs.
